Too extreme of a term?
Do you know what a phobia is? A phobia is an INENSE, irrational fear of something. When you have a phobia, you are almost completely unable to around, near, or even think about whatever it is that causes the phobia. Think about it, you don't say a person has a phobia of spiders (arachnophobia) unless he or she completely overreacts when a spider is seen. Unless he's in the corner crying, or she's hyperventilating upstairs at the mention of the word "spider", the fear is not categorized as a phobia, but rather a simple fear or uneasiness.
With an understanding of what exactly a phobia is, I believe the terms "transphobic" and "homophobia" are too extreme to describe the general population. Sure, the general population of cisgender, straight people (at least in the US) doesn't understand the LGBTQUIA community, perhaps they are ignorant or even offensive without trying to be- but do you really believe we, the general population- are irrationally terrified, unable to speak of, see or even think about those belonging to the LGBTQIA community? Surely not!
So, what do you think? Am I missing something? Or are the terms "homophobia" and "transphobic" (and be like) appropriate to describe the general population of cisgender, straight humans? Should a less extreme term(s) be used instead?
