No appt until 11.5 weeks

So my midwife scheduled my 1st appt on Aug. 10 (I'll be 11.5 weeks). When I went to the meet and greet, she said they only do ultra sounds when necessary (so I'm assuming around 18-20 weeks, and one later). This makes me a little nervous.... Don't we need to check and make sure the little one is developing normally? I will get to hear the heartbeat at my 1st visit, but I've been thinking about going to my old obgyn so I can get a scan. Should I? Or should I just wait? I looked at u/s places, but they only seem to do 3D sonograms and I don't want one of those yet. First time pregnancy, so I guess I'm also just wanting to see baby so it feels more real.
