Black girls: do you find it offensive to be called African American?

I'm black but not African American. I'm not offended if I am called African American, I just correct the person.

Nope, doesn't offend me. Not all Black people consider themselves African-American, FYI. So I consider Black American to be more inclusive and therefore preferred personally.

I believe the term African-American was created to give Black Americans whose ancestors came from the transatlantic slave trade straight to America a sense of ethnic identity since their culture and identity were destroyed.

The African Diaspora is super varied and widespread so my husband does not consider himself African-American, but Jamaican-American since that's the most recent place he can trace his family back to. Same with my friends from Ghana and Nigeria. Even though there families are actually from Africa, they'd consider themselves Nigerian- American over AA.

I'm not African American but refer to myself as either black or A.A. I'm not offended if someone calls me black or A.A. Either one is fine.
