Box dye over salon dye ??

Question

Hair history- red high lights, blonde high lights, then dyed my hair red, then cut and dyed my hair dark brown in September. ( I'm pretty sure the highlighted parts were chopped off) .

I was told I can't dye my hair a few shades lighter w/o bleaching it due to having salon dye in it.  I want to use a box dye , I'm not sure which one yet . So is it necessary to bleach my hair to go 2-3 shades lighter? Or can I just go straight in with the box dye

I'm a cosmetologist, no. Do salon die, because yes you'll have slight butch, but it'll only bring you a shade lighter. If you want to go 3 shades lighter, you'd use a 20/30 volume developer. But box dye STILL contains lightener! Plus chemicals that may conflict each other and potentionally have your hair fall out. Im all team salon.

Usually to go lighter you have to bleach it. You can try just doing it normally but chances are it'll just make whatever color you have darker.

However it is your call to make! I do know people whose hair doesn't respond well to going lighter but my hair is naturally dark brown/nearly black and I went straight to a almond blonde with only box dye. Good luck!

Personally I've been told the same thing but I still went with the box dye and never had any issues. Another thing I will say is bleaching wasn't necessary for me and I have extremely dark hair naturally and when I made the mistake of bleaching it once my hair texture was never the same again so I would vote against using it. I have alot of hair so I usually go with two boxes to make sure all the hair is coated evenly. What color is the box dye you're using? I'd beware of cheap reds or colors containing red tones because they have a tendency to become brassy or orange if you already have dyed or bleached hair from my experience.
