Pacifiers... Yes or No?

Question

Every baby I ever remember being around had a pacifier. I have been reading a lot that some parents nowadays are not using pacifiers at all. Then others say it's bull and they use one regularly. I have also heard that it's bad to use them for newly nursing babies. What are your thoughts and experiences?

My 2 week old daughter is ebf and hates the pacifier, she wants nothing to do with one.

My daughter got one in the hospital mainly because they're shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. She took it for a week and a half and then started refusing it. Several weeks later we tried again with a different brand and she started taking it again. We EBF and never had an issue because of the pacifier.

My son was taken to NICU before I could breastfeed him and given a pacifier. Even after getting a few tube feedings and having the pacifier almost constantly, he still took to breastfeeding. Now he's not a huge fan of the pacey.

My son prefers his thumb. I tried using a pacifier because I thought it might be easier to get him off the paci vs the thumb. The other day though he surprised me by putting his doll's paci in his mouth. He took a pacifier got a few minutes and then spit it out and ducked his thumb.

I wasn't planning on using one. She really only takes one when she has gas.

I don't use one. It can cause nipple confusion in the early days of breastfeeding but once established it's fine. Some babies need the extra sucking, some don't.

I was told I would want one because he'll suck my boob forever if I don't. He very rarely sucks between feeds. He occasionally will latch for longer than normal (like just now he latched for 35 minutes) but he usually latches until he's full and then he's done and doesn't need to suck until hungry again. If he does need to I offer him a clean finger and he sucks until he falls asleep then I take my finger back and he's happy.

I have some in his nursery and if he starts sucking his thumb I will try very hard to get him to take a pacifier instead!

With my first we didn't till she was older becuase I was EBF, with my second she was born a month early and the NICU gave her one to sooth herself. They don't like their  premmie setting overly up seat...too much crying can = weight loss. It was nice having her used to the Paci early on and didn't effect her breastfeeding!
