Disposing of the evidence

So, I'm running into an issue with my cats. They are so wonderful other than the fact that they like to get into my bathroom garbage can, pull out the used, bloodied tampons and pads and rip them to shreds and proceed to roll around in the bits and pieces. I had a guest in my home the other day and she used the restroom and came out to stay that my bathroom looked like a murder scene. Lol. Why are they so attracted to my used feminine hygiene products? How can I get them to stop? It's a hassle to carry out the used products to the big garbage can in the kitchen EVERY time I change it.
