Cirvix check ? Ouchhhhhhh

My doctor did a cirvix check today at 39.3 weeks. It was soooooo painful, I was screaming and even said the F word.... He stuck 2 fingers but I felt his whole hand shoving in. What's worse is that he said my cirvix is still too high and thick which means that he will need to repeat this in a few days and perhaps many times until delivery.... Is this process supposed to hurt ? Or was the doctor very harsh doing it ?
