Is marriage a huge deal? 💎

I think marriage is a really big deal and is the ultimate commitment but I have seen some posts where people say it's stupid to get married because it doesn't really mean anything.. So what is your opinion on this??

I think it depends entirely on the couple.

My husband was engaged before me. They had invites out and everything. She died in a car crash. They had property together, vehicles, and we're building a life together. When she died her estranged parents had all of the rights. My husband was at home when she died. A man crossed the center line and hit her head on. Her estranged parents blamed my husband. His rights to anything of hers were gone. The truck they purchased together was technically in her name and he lost that too. She wanted to be cremated but her parents didn't want that, so she was buried and he had no say. It was an awful lesson to learn.

Marriage is a legally binding contract giving you the rights to decision making, property, and medical choices. That's a pretty powerful piece of paper. If you chose not to marry, but chose to join your lives, then be responsible about it. Draw up wills and medical proxys etc so that you are protecting each other and the life you built, especially if children are involved.

Marriage is not the end all be all. But if it's important to you, it's not silly either. I'm an athiest so this wasn't a religious decision. It's a legal one.

Legally yes it's a huge deal. That's why we fought so hard for marriage equality to pass.

Personally, it's an individual decision as to what's right or important for each couple.

I think it's a big deal but mainly due to the social/legal/financial advantages it confers. I don't think my relationship is any different pre to post marriage.

It means a lot to me, because my marriage is recognized by God. Other than religion, it shows a huge level of commitment.

Marriage means a lot to me. I guess everybody sees it differently though but I do not put others down if they don't want to ever get married so I wish those same people that don't want to marry wouldn't put us, the people who are married down by saying things like marriage is just a piece of paper bc it isn't.

If it's a big deal to some people, that's fine. If it means nothing to some people, that's also fine. What's not fine is shaming someone for how they feel about their own marriage. General rule, your marriage is not more "right" than anyone else's and shouldn't be treated as such simply based on how you look at it.

It's not stupid but it isn't a big deal either. If it weren't for the benefits I most likely wouldn't be married because nothing but the benefits changed.

Personally, marriage is a big deal for me. Firstly, being aromantic and polyamorous (atm) makes being in a monogomous relationship slightly uncomfortable for me. I feel boxed in a bit. And although I'd possibly like to get married one day (in an open marriage relationship hopefully), the idea that I'd be stuck with one person for life scares me right now.

Secondly, in the event I do get engaged, that's a whole lot of money and time I'd have to spend for my partner and I on a wedding and such things.

And thirdly, in the event that my partner and I get a divorce (which is highly likely), that's more money I'd have to spend. Bonus, since the state I'm currently living in is a "Community Property State", I would have to give up half of my assets and property that we'd accumulated throughout our marriage. MORE MONEY.

Obviously, since I am aromantic and polyamorous (atm) my views on relationships, love, and marriage are quite different than the "norm". And because of certain things in my past, money is a very big deal to me. But this is my opinion and thoughts on marriage thus far.

I don't think marriage is that big of a deal. My relationship with my husband didn't change in anyway when we got married except now we wear rings.

Any unmarried couple could have the rights we have with signed and notarized POAs and wills

But hey it's a tax break, an who doesn't love those!
