Sleep training/night time weaning

At what point do you ladies think is a good time to start sleep training or nighttime weaning? I don't want to push my son too much too soon but seriously I'm dying. He is so erratic with his sleeping and it's killing me. Some nights he will fall asleep on his own and other times he won't. I don't want him to continue to be so dependent on me putting him to sleep and I would love it if I could get him to sleep longer than 4 hours then up for two then back asleep for two hours. It's killing me. Also I want to cute back on his night time feedings because he doesn't even take full feedings at night it's usually just a comfort thing. Also he sleeps in my room beside my bed in a bassinet/play pen am I'm going to be able to do sleep training (cry it out method or any method) if he's still right beside me? Any help would help me. I need sleep so bad I'm crying
