Rainbow babies: "Is this your first?"

Question

For those who have suffered fetal or infant loss in your first pregnancy/pregnancies... and are now pregnant again with no prior living children... How do you answer a stranger who asks if it's your first?

Answer

It depends on the circumstances.  I really wish people wouldn't ask that question at all - if it's at work and a colleague or customer asks I'll simply say yes most of the time. If it's out elsewhere I'll answer honestly and say it's my second pregnancy but I don't have any living children or that I lost my first baby.  People generally look quite taken aback and uncomfortable with the honest answer,  but I decided at some point that I wouldn't deny the existence of the baby I lost to keep nosy strangers comfortable.  It's about time that we spoke out more about miscarriage and infant loss so that those going through it don't feel like they have to suffer in silence.  By being honest about my loss when I can I hope that I'm helping to break the taboo.

I actually just wrote about this topic on my blog (www.livingthroughourloss.com). A lot of loss mamas gave their opinions if you wanted to read them! I lost my baby girl at 33 weeks hours after giving birth to her so when people ask I always say one on the way and an angel baby girl. It's a hard question when asked but I refuse to leave her out unless the situation would cause more explanation then needed.

"It's my first living child" or "no third pregnancy furthest ever tho" people tend to get weird and shut up after that.

This little miracle is my rainbow baby girl! I miscarried one before last year November! I was so emotional. The hospital said sorry for your lose but maybe its a good thing. I was so pissed. After i was told i miscarried i left. I was hurt n fusterated n i just wanted to die. I came back to my apartment n ran to my room n just collasped on my bed n cried. My mom found me a week later. I didnt talk. I showed her the papers n she had me come home for a month. Im happy now i have a healthy little girl on way!!! Im too blessed to be stressed! 😃😀

I had a miscarriage in 2013 and 2 months later got pregnant again with my second who is now 2. When I was pregnant with him I always said yes because I didn't want to make anyone feel sorry for me or awkward.
