Pump and Dump

Lesley
Why do people actually advise people to do this?!
My midwife, doctors and prenatal leader have told me under no uncertain terms do I ever pump and dump.
Breast milk is liquid gold! Your body metabolises alcohol so quickly and less than trace amounts of alcohol end up in breast milk even if you were to go out and be absolutely smashed off your head.
If you're safe to drive, you're safe to feed, the risk is more from dropping your baby than any actual substance in your milk.
If you're not safe to drive, WAIT and your body will metabolise the alcohol out of your entire system, including your breast milk, which doesn't just sit in your breasts. I'm training to be a lactation consultant and this is one of the first things you learn!

If you are skipping a feeding because you are drinking then it can be a good idea to "pump and dump" to maintain supply and prevent engorgment. That's the only reason I would do it.

You really wouldn't need to dump it. That's my point. Xx

So if I was to drink a little I don't dump? How long should I wait to breast feed then ?

Of you want to have a drink one of the best ways to do it is to drink while you are breastfeeding, by baby's next feeding time you will be completely fine. It depends on how much you drink, usually 1-3 hours is enough unless you go on a real bender. If you are unsure, or nervous about it, they sell breast milk testing strips that detect alcohol. But really as the party says, of you are legal to drive you are fine to breastfeed. (do not that in Aus the level for legal driving is .02... and in Canada it's .05... not sure about the US but it's a good general rule lol) I would say 1 drink, 1 hour not a problem

Everything I've read says wait until you don't feel tipsy and you'll be fine. You can also pump it in the meantime and put it in baby's bath water to help with acne eczema cradle cap etc! It's great!

I always had to if I had a drink because my boobs would be so huge and painful and would leak everywhere. I had no problem whatsoever with supply so it didn't matter at all to me if I threw it away.
