Credit score question

Ok so right now my husband's credit is at poor we have a few credit cards we owe but right now were a bit tight on money so were gonna wait tilk taxes to pay back our debt which in total is about maybe $3,000 so anyway when taxes are here and we pay it all off does that mean his credit score will automatically go back up or no ? If no then what can he do to start getting it back up again?
