Advice?

Doctor started me on Metformin 500mg 3X a day about two weeks ago. She told me to start the pill after AF comes. I called to let her know af came and she said she would send the Birth control pill script So, I went to pick it up. Apparently it was never sent in and her office is closed.  I am TTC and don't understand why I should start the pill. She said I should take it for a while until I decide I want to come in for more tests and get hubbys sperm count. But can't I just skip all that and take Metformin alone?
