I've had endometriosis since I was 16 and had very irregular periods. Several Drs told me I would have a hard time getting pregnant due to the endometriosis and several said I wouldn't get pregnant due to long cycles and irregular periods. I was told that since my cycles were over 45 days long I didn't ovulate. Low and behold I've given birth to one healthy boy, conceived him on the first try and am now pregnant with my second. Both times my cycles were 51+ days long.

You CAN ovulate even if cycle is irregular.  Same as you may NOT ovulate even if your cycle IS regular.

Ok. Let's start by saying that yes, it's true that you can't get pregnant if you don't ovulate. Ovulation is when an egg is released from your ovary, and with no egg, no baby. With that being said, having irregular periods does not mean you aren't ovulating. I didn't even have a period in January, and had really long irregular cycles and got pregnant at the end of April. My SIL has ~super~ regular periods but isn't ovulating, and can't get pregnant.

You cannot get pregnant if you don't ovulate - you need to release an egg to get pregnant.
Having irregular cycles does not mean you don't ovulate though - you might want to try charting your basal body temperature for a couple cycles as that should confirm if you are ovulating or not and if not then you can try medication like clomid to help you ovulate.

I don't know... but my period was irregular, and I got pregnant, so I think I ovulated at some point, and just wasn't aware of it.

Considering an egg has to be fertilized in order for a baby to form, yes, it's true that you can't get pregnant if you don't ovulate. However, irregular periods do not necessarily mean that you're not ovulating.
