Is he getting enough?

Question

I have been breastfeeding and pumping since my son was born due to some issues with jaundice (they wanted to know exactly what he was getting and he didn't latch good at first). When I breastfeed him he will stay latched for 30 minutes to an hour at a time. Is this normal? Sometimes I take him off because I feel like he is using me as a pacifier since he will fall asleep multiple times during the feeding. When I do this, I pump afterwards and give him the rest of the milk on a bottle. Im just not sure how to know that he actually done. Please help! Thanks

You can have them check for tongue or lip tie too to rule that out, sometimes that can cause the long sessions and the frequent dozing off basically because it's too hard haha. Sometimes it's totally normal too!

That is normal, you can definitely keep it up! You can try keeping him awake while feeding - talking, tickling, sometimes even using a wet washcloth and wiping hat on their arm or someplace might help but also know that in spite of best efforts especially at first falling asleep while nursing sometimes just can't be prevented. So bumping him off and pumping is a great solution for now or if he's at least sort of suckin for the half hour that is fine. Or I had a lactation consultant tell me to keep them efficient- try ten minutes on each side every two hours and see if that works....
