late periods and birth control

I'm not sexually active, but I'm starting birth control because my period is incredibly irregular. However, everything I've read has said to wait until the Sunday after your period starts to begin taking it and since my period won't come I can't fix the problem. I'm 47 days into my cycle right now and there's no end in sight. Should I just start the birth control now or will that mess everything up?
