not sure why...
Yesterday I had surgery to have a fetal shunt put in my baby's bladder to allow her urine to be expelled from the bladder. I'd never had anaesthesia before, and I was scared to death...especially when the anaesthologist told me he was going to give me a spinal anesthesia. It was much like an epidural, but went further into the spine. After it was in and the procedure was underway, I felt nothing but my arms were shaking because I was unable to regulate my body temperature, which was normal. I never said I was nervous, but I guess my blood pressure showed it because two or three times the anaesthologist gently placed both of his hands on either side of my head while asking if I was okay.
Not sure why, but that one gesture calmed me instantly each time. Just a heads up for you practicing medical students...very calming technique for nervous patients!!
