Irregular menstrual period, hard to get pregnant?

Hello! Just a quick question, is it really hard to get pregnant if you have irregular cycle? We recently got married and planning to get pregnant in time, but I am irregular. I have asked my dr. to test me for infertility but she said we should have been trying to get pregnant for at least a year before they do the test. I am just thinking maybe we're gonna have a hard time getting pregnant... If you are irregular and got pregnant, how long did it take you to be pregnant? Thank you!
