jaundice

Valerie
My 2 week old has what his pediatrician referred to as breastfed jaundice. He got bloodwork done and results say the bilirubin count is at a 10 - high but not high enough to be readmitted to the hospital and she said the way to get rid of it is more frequent feedings so he pees and poops it out basically. Well with more frequent feedings, he's actually been pooping LESS (one dirty diaper a day) and it struggling after every feeding with trying to poop. I feel so bad for my baby. Any advice or feedback on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

My son had jaundice his bilirubin levels were a 16.5. High enough he was admitted to have phototherapy for a week. When he got out it was at a 13 and they said if it goes back up he needs to be admitted again. So when we left we literally stayed outside in the sun as much as possible feelings he was peeing and pooping enough. Try rubbing baby's belly to help with the constipation. When he was first born the nurses had to help and I did for a while too, if comfortable take a q-tip or baby thermometer put a little Vaseline on it and slowly insert into the butt gently and not a lot then routate is in circles. It'll make a baby poop but try not to do this every single day. My son finally was going every 2 days.

Its more that bub is having both wet and soiled nappies. Many breastfed babies dont poo every day. My son only pooped once a week sometimes a bit longer. Just keep feeding regularly and make sure he's having enough wet nappies. You cant make him poo if he doesn't need to...

My baby had jaundice, it goes away over time. It starts at their head and works its way down then back up again.

You can also put him in front of a window in the sunlight or take him out on a walk. The sunlight helps break them down. You can do it in 15-20 min intervals.
