Anyone had a similar situation??

Okay so I've been on birth control for the last seven years. I found out recently by my doctor that my hormone levels were very low and she prescribed hormone cream to help. I don't want to take this cream because it caused a benign lump to form on my mother's breast and she is dealt with that for the last 3 years and I don't want to go through what she has. I asked my doctor if there was a different form of birth control I can take that wouldn't affect my hormones as badly but she more or less avoided my question and gave me the cream anyway. So for about the last month or so I have stopped my birth control to try and correct my hormone levels. I have been married for almost 2 years now and my husband has supported my decision to stop birth control. I am about 4 days away from starting my period but due to the fact that we have had unprotected sex and that lack of pms that usually happens the week before, I figured there was a chance I could be pregnant. So far I have taken a pregnancy test and it came back negative. I'm just trying to see if anyone has went through a similar situation. I'm not really sure what to expect like I said I've been on birth control for 7 years straight and I'm not sure how long it will take before I'm ovulating again and I want to be prepared if "baby A" was to come in to the picture. Any input would be most helpful!
