Yeast infections

I had a yeast infection for a week now, I did the over the counter treatment but my symptoms only got worse so I went to the doctor. I took the pills however my symptoms are worse than ever, should it clear up right away or does it take a while? I seem to be very prone to uti's and yeast infections so what more should I do to prevent them? Sick of dr. visits and antibiotics
