previous low birth weight babies

I had my 1st ob appointment yesterday. I talked about all of my concerns, he did bring up one thing about my previous birth. My daughter was small, 5.2 at birth. My doctor said that since she was small, when I get closer to my due date they would be doing more ultrasounds to check the fluid and see how true he baby is progressing. Is this normal? This is my second pregnancy.
