Is this cheating?

I recently discovered messages online between my man (of 3yrs) and another girl he has not met in person. In the messages he tells her she's beautiful and asks if she has a boyfriend. 
I'm caught completely off guard. I never would have expected this from him. Our relationship has been very good and I love him very much. But since discovering these messages I feel riddled with insecurity and am questioning our relationship. Help please :(

He crossed a line. It wouldn't be physically cheating but it is a form of cheating. He's with you, yet flirting with girls on the internet. My husband did that like a 2-3 months into dating. It was hell for the both of us once I found out. We fixed it though ☺️

Just because he didn't physically kiss (or whatever) another female, doesn't mean he didn't cheat! He is sitting there calling another girl beautiful which I guess isn't wrong but he should be calling you beautiful. And why does he need to know if she's single or not? If I ever caught my man doing this I would break up with him. I don't put up with that bullshit
