Travelling with a newborn for Christmas?

So this summer my boyfriend and I moved from Maryland to California leaving all of our friends and family behind. The baby is due December 6th so she'll be not quite a month old around Christmas time. I know my family and friends will want us to fly home so they can see the baby, but it's just not feasible. My friend is upset that I won't be coming home but I don't want to risk taking my not even 3 week baby on an airplane. Too many germs and we'll both still be adjusting to our new lives. Any one else dealing with this? How do I tell then without making it seem like I don't want to go. I'd love to spend the holidays with them but I simply cannot.

I work in the hospital and see too many teeny weenies in the winter with terrible respiratory infections. They can get so, so sick. Technically, you can fly, but I wouldn't risk it that time of year. Just tell them your pediatrician said no. They can't argue with that, and it'll be harder for them to be mad at you since, as far as they know, you're just following medical advice.

Actually, we're getting ready to move cross country with our 6 week old, and our pediatrician advised we not fly with him if at all possible.

Also, you have no idea how your delivery/recovery will go. You may not be even close to ready to be traveling if you have a tougher recovery.

same issue here except we live in China and our families live in Europe 😊 we won't be going back home as he'll be too young for such a long trip so that's why the grandparents on both sides are coming to visit (one after the other) and everybody was briefed to update their vaccinations, incl. whooping cough. with this I think we'll be ok 😊

I would just tell them if they want to see you and baby for Christmas, they can come to you. My husband and I normally go to his grandma's house on Christmas Eve..it's about three hours each way, so six hours total spent in the car that day. I'm due November 28 and his family knows it's possible that baby and I just won't be up to that much in one day. That's a lot for a newborn! I'm not making that decision until baby is here, but I don't feel like it would be unreasonable if I decide not to go..they can always come visit us this year instead.

Yeah that is hard but at 3 weeks old I wouldn't either. They don't have their vaccines, you will still be recovering , it is just too soon. I would say it like that and add if anyone wants to come see you guys so you won't be alone for Christmas you wouldn't mind ;)

Until baby has had first round of vaccines you can't fly with bubs. It's hard and your families will still sulk. But you need to advise this is for the health of your baby and not about what they want.

It's absolutely ok to fly with newborn since your dr tells baby is healthy and strong. My baby girl was just two weeks old when we had to fly for 3 hours due to moving to another country urgently because of my hb's work. She was great, she was sleeping throughout fly and woke up right after landing. I do not see any reason why not to fly.

My baby is 4.5 months old. At 3 weeks, he still had day/night mixed up, slept no more than an hour or 2 at a time, only napped if being held. I was exhausted and still in pain from delivery. I had a lot of tailbone pain and couldn't sit comfortably in anything. I can't imagine taking a long trip then. My family lives 1.5 hours away and I didn't drive to see them until baby was 7 weeks old. I don't know that you'll feel like going, you never how how'll you'll feel after delivery. And I posted this on someone else's reply, but the due date is not a deadline, it's an estimate. My baby was 10 days late, that would make your little one even younger when you would need to travel if that happened to you.
