bilingual kids?

Question

has anyone raised a bilingual child without being bilingual yourself? neither me nor the father speak more than English. I live on the border of Texas and Mexico so I have to know some, but I'm not fluent. I definitely want my son to at least know Spanglish lol. if I read him books in Spanish, watch tv shows, music, etc., will that be enough to teach him without speaking it at home? I'm from a Mexican family so I grew up with certain Spanish words and I'll definitely raise him the same way, but I want him to know more.. is it realistic?

My grandma raised me and all she could speak was Vietnamese, so that's the only reason why I speak it fluently. I'm glad she did because my parents can't speak English very well (they're both from Vietnam), but I am able to communicate with them just fine.

I only speak english, but my boyfriend is fluent in both spanish & english. His mom is around our son a lot, and speaks to him mainly in Spanish. He's 13 months old and will make the noise of what animal she asks, knows what his feet/hands are, water, types of food and clothing. He knows a lot actually considering I don't speak the language. My son also goes to daycare and is learning sign language- he can say please, more and thankyou. It's amazing how young children don't have that language barrier!

It's worth a shot. Babies and young children do not differentiate between languages. They do not know when English/Spanish/French/Korean whatever it is is being spoken, they just know they are being spoken to. Your baby will pick up whatever you teach them and later in life they will sort out the differences. A friend of mine growing up had a little sister who switched between English and Polish all the time because she was too young to understand the difference yet. I would definitely go for it.

All three of my kids are but that's because their school offers a dual language program. Most schools do, I'm sure expecially in Texas. I'm in Illinois so it's more rare....but they've been in it since kindergarten, and I have a 8th grader, 4th, grader and 2nd grader who all three are fluent now. I know a little because of them...it's def a decision I do not regret....until my 8th grade daughter yells at me in Spanish hahaha jk

I'm 100% Hispanic and speak fluent Spanish but my husband isn't Hispanic and doesn't speak it so in our home we don't speak Spanish at all. I'm pregnant and I want my kid to be bilingual like me but when it's not spoken in our home I'm not sure how easy it'll be. Luckily my family speaks Spanish so I hope interacting with my side of the family will help my baby speak Spanish as well!

Heh we kinda do. Bough Aussie and speaking only English, I did some French and Italian in school, BF did Indonesian. My son knows a smattering of phrases in other languages we've taught him from like movies and stuff (example he knows that Uno mas means one more).

Just fun/silly stuff for us. But I think it's prob best/easiest to teach a child a second language once they can grasp the first language properly.

I can speak broken Spanish. I already told my family they have to speak to him in Spanish, and then whatever words I know I will speak to him in. I'm also going to label things around the house in both Enhlish and Spanish. We'll be learning together!
