Any Other Ways to Clean Retainer?

I have a Hawley retainer, and I've always cleaned it with toothpaste. Are there any other ways I can clean/disinfect it?

You shouldn't really use toothpaste on it because the toothpaste has grit and can leave microscratches in the plastic where bacteria can get in and grow. Denture cleaner works pretty well (Polident). There are also a few cleaners made specifically for retainers. Retainer-brite is one brand. Make sure you have a separate brush just for your retainer. Don't use the same brush on your teeth. When I had one I'd use what I had. I'd buy those fizzy tabs used to clean dentures in water (effordent? E-dent? Idr). If I was out of that peroxide, alcohol, or vinegar was an option. If I was out of all that too, soap and water worked fine.

We tell patients to use distilled white vinegar. It removes the calcium from the tarter build up and makes it soft to brush off. It is what we use at my office to clean dentures,partial, night guards.

I put mine in a hydrogen peroxide/water mixture! I usually let it soak all day. Haven't had any problems!
