bumpers..??

Question

Can I ask a question about padded bumpers? Why are they still being sold if they are as unsafe as they say they are? I was given a hand me down crib that was a drop side crib and after trying to figure out how to put together the last piece of the crib online I found out that they were banned and no longer in production bc of the dangers. Why not do the same with the bumpers?

Bumpers become handy when your kiddo gets to this stage:
We got mesh bumpers and used them for a few months where she was moving enough to get herself caught and still didn't have the limb control to get herself free every time. We took them back out once she was sitting herself up/pulling on things. They serve a short term purpose and there are safer (mesh) choices out there.

My good friend has twin girls. They didn't use bumpers and the one little girl got her leg stuck through the hole and they actually had to call the fire dept to break her crib and get it out. At 1 year old poor baby broke her leg.

If they banned bumpers they should ban bassinets. I had more issues with my daughter being too close to the sides of her bassinet than I ever did with bumper pads. I started using them after she was old enough to roll around, get her limbs stuck and cry trying to pull them back out. I didn't have any issues, it's when they are young and newborn, the issue is air flow into the crib and the baby moving toward it and suffocating because they don't or can't move away.

I had baby monitors and alarms. I had the angel monitor that alerts after 20 seconds of no breathing/movement. I used bumpers. They are extremely handy when baby gets older and puts legs through crib and gets stuck (either on accident or like my son- on purpose for attention ). I was scared after I got crap from people and took them down. I put mesh ones up. They are ok too. Later, when he was 7-8 months old I put the real ones back up. 
With baby number two I'll just use the mesh and not spend the money.

None of the bumpers, even the mesh ones are truly safe. I figure I'd rather have a baby with a broken limb than a suffocated dead baby.

I also feel like my child learned to be aware of her surroundings in bed much earlier because she didn't have the bumpers to rely on. She was in a toddler bed at 18 months and a full size bed with no rails at 2.5 years and had never fallen out.

They're banned in some places, but the US is slow to ban things, and some people still use them regardless of the risk of SIDS. People also wait to use them until baby is older.
