Plagiocephaly (flat head) ANYONE?

I mentioned at my sons 4-month appointment yesterday that his VERY MINOR flat spot on his right side looked like it was still there since his 2-month appointment. I'll admit, it's harder to be more strict with doing tummy time when I am also chasing my toddler around. Doc said all is fine but it wouldn't hurt to see a specialist to make sure he doesn't need a helmet. HELMET?! She wouldn't have even noticed it had I not pointed it out. I feel like a consult will immediately result in a helmet because, from what I read online, those specialist docs are ALWAYS eager to put one on. Has anyone else experienced this? I feel like his head is going to even out just fine with more tummy time and bumbo sitting. I think I'm going to give it another month with LOTS of sitting up time to see if it gets better (again, it's NOT even noticeable really). Any experiences or advice is greatly appreciated, I'm one worried momma! I couldn't handle making him suffer with a helmet and it seems so extreme! He does have a BIG head (99%) but, so did my oldest. Does his head look unbalanced to you?!

Our pediatrician said the research from the helmets are all funded by the helmet manufacturers and that wearing the helmet is totally unnecessary. She said it would correct itself with time as he begins sitting up more and more active.

I'm in the same boat with my daughter. Dr didn't seemed concerned at all at 2 month and her 4 months is coming up and the one spot is still there but not as bad 😟

Our little girl had a flat spot on her right side due to torticollis. We live in Australia and the two physios and pediatrician who we went to all said that they use helmets as a last resort for severe cases here. The physio has fixed up her neck and now with lots tummy time and supervised naps on the left side, the flat spot is barely noticeable. I don't think your little one's is very noticeable at all, but I agree that you could always hear the specialist out and then decide what to do

Honestly I think he will be fine. Once they can sit up on their own especially, I'm sure the flat spot will start going away with time. Of course it's good to try to keep them off their head as much as possible, but it's hard to avoid with nap time/bed time/car seat!

My daughter's doctor mentioned her head getting flat at her 2 month checkup and just said to do more tummy time. (I have, but not super strictly) and she just had her 4 month checkup and didn't mention anything about her head at all, and I personally think it's pretty much the same.

I'd wait it out until maybe 6 months.

I took my son to a specialist right a little after his 2 month, he would look to his left side & wouldn't want to turn anywhere else. When I took his to the specialist she said what they are mostly concerned about if it's the facial features change, that's when they recommend the helmet. My sons neck muscles were really tight so I started taking him to physical therapy so I could get a better idea on how I could help him since he is my first. Since I work all day I do all kinds of stretches with him before bath time.. I took him his 3 month again to see the specialist & they were very satisfied with the changes. Tummy time helps a lot! Pinterest also has a lot of different idea to help you out with that. I almost cried when his doctor said he might need a helmet, because I felt like I wasn't doing something right. Once I talked to the specialist I felt relieved. It's nothing bad it's more common now than before.

I am going through this with my son. I went to see a pediatric neurologist when he was 3 months  and he ultimately left the decision up to me on whether to put a helmet on him. He told me that the helmet would more than likely make pretty fussy and that most insurances do not cover it since it is considered "cosmetic." The only way the would cover it is if it was causing a health issue. I decided to try to keep him off his head as much as possible when he's awake and go back to the neurologist at 6 months to see how things are progressing. He also told me that if I d coded to put a helmet on him, we would need to do it no later than when he's 9 months. At our 4 month check up, our regular pediatrician said "absolutely do not put a helmet on him and let me know if the neurologist tells you he needs one at his next check up." He said it would correct itself on its own and not to worry.. Sorry this was so long. I hope it helps!

Check out candokiddo.com. She has tons of info on flat head and ways to try and fix it. My son has a minor flat spot as well that I was going to mention at his appt next week. A helmet isn't THAT big of a deal. Kids have them all the time and they make stickers and such to decorate! It wouldn't hurt meeting with a specialist--maybe they can give you some insight and methods to help fix it!

My daughter favored her right side and wouldn't turn her head the other way so she got a flat spot and the doctor noticed at her 2 month checkup   So we started laying her down so she was forced to turn to the left and she was able to sit up with help more so the spot has slowly gone away. She's 4 months now and the spot hasn't completely gone away but her doctor said it looks fine and should completely go away or at least not be noticeable now that she's getting bigger and spends less time laying on her back
I wouldn't worry too much. I think the helmet is only for severe cases

Well our appointment with the specialist isn't until Nov 11th. Since his 4-month appointment a few days ago, I've been a Momzilla with tummy-time and naps strapped ON ME so his head isn't getting pressure on it. At night I've been obsessively turning his head. I also placed a toy to his left so he looks that way while in his bed. Fingers crossed that 2 1/2 more weeks of these tricks will show some improvement and we get a good report from the doc.
