Maternity leave?

This is my first child so I'm new to all of this. I live in Virginia and plan on taking short term disability. How early can you file a claim? Mostly because what I'm reading sounds like I can't file a claim until my doctor has announced that I am unable to work. I really don't want to wait until the last minute with all these holidays coming up.

I live in texas so I don't know how different it is. But HR told me to go ahead and start now, unless you like thrill then do it last minute lol that's what he told me, and I'm not due till april. You can always call and ask them as well.

I am not due until January but I have been turning in required paperwork and having my doctor sign forms that have to be submitted. I started because of the holidays and I didn't want anyone off that had to sign any forms.
