Hawaiian middle name?

Question

My SO and I are in love with a particular name as a middle name.

It's uncommon here and rather common in Hawaii.
We are not Hawaiian, but we respectfully feel a connection to the land and the name.

I'm not concerned with it being unique, hard to pronounce, Etc. 
I am curious about opinions on using a name from a culture that my child doesn't have blood heritage from. Thoughts?

I think it's fine! I think you're just appreciative of the culture. I see no issue with it. In fact, it's a beautiful story to tell your child.

My nieces name is Leilani which means heavenly flower and is a Hawaiian name... She's Black Portugese & Cambodian... she's not Hawaiian but her name fits her.

You shouldn't go off of what others think besides people name their children all kinds of things. If you all love it that's all that matters

We are thinking about giving our son a Hawaiian middle name because Hawaii has a special place in our hearts. My husband and I met there in 2014 and we are now stationed in hawaii and our first baby will be born here in March 2017!

I really appreciate you asking. I wonder why the desire to use another heritage's name than your own?  Serious question -- not being flippant.

Names are really important to Hawaiians, our culture and our history. I'm Hawaiian and our son has a Hawaiian name. He was not named for the first two days of his life. There was careful consultation between my brother and my dad's best friend who named him. One name was even left out because of circumstances surrounding her birth. In short, what you name your child matters, so be very thoughtful (which you already have been thankfully) and careful.

My parents made a pint of an English name, I did the same with my children. None of us have any English blood at all but we live in Ann English speaking country so giving our children tartar/Indian names seemed a bit ridiculous. It's more important that the name is functional (easy to pronounce, memorable, doesn't carry any awkward connotations) than making it match up to your ethnic type.

I have a couple cousins with Hawaiian names. There is kekailoa (Kay-Ki-loa), Leilani (Lay-Loni), kealoha (Kay-low-ha) & Kekoa (Key-Co-Ah) I love Hawaiian names. But they all have Hawaiian in them except kekoa. But hey whatever floats your boat
