Dr Ultra Sound Policies?

This is just general curiosity because I read so many conflicting accounts about US. Some people say 12 weeks is standard for first US. However some of us had US earlier than 12 weeks. I was 9 weeks exactly when I got mine done a little over a week ago.  Others go in at 7 or 8 weeks. I do understand that women that are higher risk probably get them done earlier to monitor the baby's growth ect. Why is there so much conflicting info?  Is it  really just dependent on the OBGYN?

I think it really does depend on your OB or midwife. Under ideal circumstances, mine typically only does ultrasounds for birth defect screening (NT scan, anatomy scan) or for dating if someone has super irregular cycles. They feel more ultrasounds really aren't necessary and don't improve health outcomes for mom or baby.

However, if there are any issues, they don't shy away from doing them at all. I ended up with one at 7 weeks, one at 8, one at 10, and the NT scan at 11 weeks 4 days. (History of miscarriage + bleeding = more ultrasounds).

I had a previous OB who did an ultrasound at almost every appointment as a normal policy.

So it seems like it's really up to the doctor.

It's really up to the doctor, and in some areas where there seem to be few OBGYNSs, sometimes they may prefer to see patients later in the pregnancy.

I have a super irregular cycle and was taken in at 8 weeks - originally dated at 6.5, but hey were off by 1.5 weeks. Despite me constantly repeating that I have PCOS, the ultrasound tech wanted to date me off of my cycle and I told him I couldn't remember.

With my daughter I only had 1 us at 20 weeks.

I've already had multiple ultrasounds so far for this pregnancy.

5w passed out at work got us at er, confirmed twins but only 1 heartbeat
6w er follow-up with ob, us found both heartbeats but baby b was measuring behind 
8w follow-up with ob to check growth on baby b both babies measuring right on track
10w pulled muscle in belly us with ob to check on things
12w scan is this Wednesday know we'll be getting us

We were told at our 8w app that due to twins  we'd be getting us every month

I have had multiple due to multiple miscarriages. Had one around 6 weeks, one at 7w5d (8w) and 11 weeks. Hopefully I will be getting one again at 15 weeks. I was suppose to have one at 13 weeks but she forgot to write me in. But my office does it at 8 weeks for dating, 20 weeks and one again around 35ish weeks.

I think it depends on everyone's different situation. I've had about 5 ultrasounds so far because we did IVF and fertility doctors check on things a lot more often. When I switch over to my normal OB next week I will only get the standard few ultrasounds

I found out I was pregnant at 3w 4d, called my doctor and she had me go for bloodwork the next morning to confirm. Once the bloodwork came back, she called me to schedule my first ultrasound. Had my first ultrasound at 6w after the heart starts beating, then 8w, then 12w. Had nothing to do with me being high risk or not. I am 13w 1d now and probably won't have another ultrasound now for a little while, because I'm switching out to a birth center for the remainder of my pregnancy and am just going through the acceptance process now. Hopefully sometime between 16-20 weeks I'll get to see our baby again!

I think it depends on the OBGYN and what they feel is necessary.

With my first. I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks, 10 weeks, NT Scan at 13 weeks , Anatomy at 18 weeks and then I had a few other ultrasounds just because my OBGYN asked if I wanted one

With this baby I think I only get 3.

First was at 10 weeks , 2nd will be NT and 3rd will be Anatomy...
However since I'm now High Risk idk how the ultrasounds will go.

I will be just over 12 weeks when I get my first US. And when talking to some other people, it's early. I am dying for it to be 12 weeks already. This Friday I have my first OB appt, and hope so hard that I will hear the heart beat.
