What does a baby eat?

I feel really stupid for not knowing this, but when a woman gives birth and the milk takes a while to come in, what does the baby eat?! I heard it can take as long as 5 days for milk to come in...

Colostrum with no need to give formula, colostrum is calorie rich for this purpose. Milk usually comes at 3-5 days. All three of my children gained weight at the 5 day weigh in after birth. Don't doubt your boobs 😉

You have colostrum that you breast feed your baby before your milk comes in. It has everything your baby needs ,such as antibodies to protect them from getting sick. So if you're breast feeding that's the first thing he or she will get

My milk came in on day 2 but little one was 3.5 weeks early so she wasn't able to suckle efficiently and we did have to supplement with pumped breast milk and formula because she was losing too much weight. 3 months later, she nursing great but still supplement with formula.
