my husband upset me

We have been going through a rocky path but we are working through it like any marriage should. He just doesn't show his love and compassion for me. He doesn't take the time to compliment me or tell me I'm appreciated. I told him today how I felt and he got defensive and told me he just doesn't have to do so. It really hurts me bc I'm not asking for a lot and what im asking for doesn't doesn't cost a dime and I just don't understand why he won't take the time.
