pacifiers?

Been reading up on the pros and cons of pacifiers. What are your thoughts? Are you going to get one and run the risk of poor latching/having to take it away? Or are you going to get one in order to help baby soothe and sleep?  Tough call!

There's plenty of scientific research to show that pacifiers reduce the risk of SIDS, and no research at all to show that they interfere with breastfeeding. It just depends on whether you trust facts or anecdotes.

I haven't bought any and don't plan to give one to her right away but I'm not completely opposed to them. I figured they are a cheap thing I can easily buy after baby is born if I feel I need them. I'm trying to stay minimal when it comes to baby items so if I don't need it right when she comes I'm trying to wait to buy stuff as needed so I don't have tons of things to deal with.

I'm going to have them on hand. For breastfeeding they only recommend not using one right away until your baby establishes their latch then after that it shouldn't do any harm. Like many people have already said (but I feel like it can't be stressed enough) a pacifier can be taken away but a thumb/finger never can. When it comes time to take the pacifier away though make sure you do not cave in because having one for too long will effect the babys teeth as they become a toddler. Just stay strong and know it's only a few rough nights before they forget all about the pacifier. Babies are resilient. I am a child development major and always learned that 18 months is the ideal age to take away a pacifier for easiest transition and least amount of tooth damage.

My first baby lived for her pacifier. However, I was an exclusive pumper (as she was a NICU baby and never learned to latch). It seriously has saved my sanity at times. Pop that bad boy in her mouth and it's like an instant mute button. Especially for long car rides. 😬 I highly recommend it. She was very picky about what kind. Only the green soothie kind which the hospital generally will give you (it also happens to be the kind attached to wub a nubs - pacifiers with the animals attached at the end - she used these animals as one would a stress ball and that with the sucking helped calm her) I HIGHLY recommend you use a pacifier, if your baby likes it,

I gave both of my babies pacifiers. When both turned one I took it away from them along with bottles and diapers. You just have to have patience. Both of my kids did great the first 2 night was a lil hard but we got thro it!!!!!!

I nursed and used pacies successfully with my son and I plan on using them with my daughter. 
My oldest two did use pacies and they ended up sucking their fingers and that was 10X harder of a habit to break than the pacifier

Babies like to suck. I say get them. It's all about control over how often and when you ween them off of it. Most kids will like a pacifier or their thumb. You can eventually take a pacifier away, but not their thumb.

Glow in the dark ones, the cute little phrases, plus matching her outfits! I was excited lol. But...

My daughter was two months early, So she was in the NICU for a few weeks. Funny enough she never fully took to hers. She was tube and bottle fed in the hospital, and never got to nurse. Once she came home I was too scared with her still being so small, so for maby 2 weeks I kept using bottles also. I got tired of pumping every time and heating my milk at night and just went for it. She latched first try. She would only cry when hungry then instantly fall asleep or stop crying and was just so content afterwards. I bf on demand also, no time limit. Every baby is different, bottles and pacifiers aren't guaranteed to cause latch issues. She used Nuk and Avent bottles while I was at work and would nurse just fine when I came home.

I actually bought a few different pacifiers just because I wanted her to have one. She kind of liked the Nuk ones, and then just refused to take them around 5months. She would spit it out and stare at me. lol when she would get fussy I would try to give it to her and she would flip out!, I couldn't believe it, So I let her latch and that was that. Her doctor said it was great, and don't push it because a lot of babies have a hard time self soothing due to them, and become too dependent on them for a long time. My niece was ebf from day one. She Never had a bottle, But had a pacifier, it totally ruined her teeth when they started coming in. No latch issues at all, just a horrible attachment. I say go with how your baby is. You never know how he/she will react to it, they don't need them and it's one less thing to worry about later.

I don't plan on using them at all, but I will have some on hand in case I need them. My pediatrician also recommends not using them the first few months, particularly since I plan to breastfeed.
