My doctors office doesn't recommend that I introduce the pacifier to my baby until he's at least a month old. How long did you wait to introduce the pacifier?

I never gave my baby one, nor do I plan to give any of my babies one.

I never gave one, I tried a handful of times once we had a good nursing latch and hungry cues, but my daughter never took one. Quite honestly I'm so glad she didn't. I didn't have to deal with it falling out, or getting lost, or popping it back in 100 times through the night, or weaning. Unless I'm completely desperate, and have a colicky baby, I won't be using one with my next either. With my first she just nursed a lot, and I was ok with that. It was frustrating at times, but now I miss those moments so much.

My daughter was given a pacifier in the hospital by the nurses two days after she was born. She was in the NICU and they do it to reduce the risk of SIDS. The con is that I believe it led to her not being able to nurse, although they also bottle fed her (she couldn't nurse right way due to weak lung function), so that may have contributed as well. And she didn't break the habit until her 2nd birthday. But she had no developmental issues at all, her speech developed quickly and she's a chatterbox who speaks better than most kids her age (she'll be three in December). I also never had any problems understanding her hunger cues due to the pacifier. Babies sometimes just really need to suck. They don't always need to feed, but they do like to suck. It soothes them and comforts them. They sleep better and it reduces the risk of SIDS. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

At my LO's 2 week check we were told to go for it! She was nursing well and gaining weight and had started to really want to be on the breast but not eat! I have no problem reading her cues, nor did I ever. She still  (4 weeks later) can really take it or leave it... but when she takes it it is definitely a lifesaver! Sucking is one of the things that helps comfort babies and my poor nipples were paying the price!

The reason they say that is because newborns communicate hunger through gestures and body language. Normally facial movements and touching their mouth etc. If you use a pacifier you will not be able to read your baby until it is crying at which stage it is much hungrier than it could have been during initial communication.
What is your reason for wanting to use a pacifier? Out of curiosity. I've always been worried about it slowing communication and speech development. Along with the 'separation' part which doesn't sound like fun at all. FTM but influenced by my Mum who didn't use pacifiers for me or my sister, didn't have comfort blankies or even an inseparable toy. We both turned out fine and dandy! And I wouldn't say my childhood was missing anything, they always said we were very well behaved. :D xxx.

We had planned to wait on the pacifier until we realized our baby had such an oral fixation, the hospital said pacifiers do help reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. I breast-fed for three weeks until my milk stopped coming in and now he is on bottles, and he has had absolutely no issues with either

The only reason we tried giving her it is because she had jaundice as a newborn and they kept her in her little bed with that light over her and the nurse said we could use a pacifier so she will stay calm. I really didn't want to give it to her so she said I could use my finger instead but I got tired of that quick so I gave her the pacifier . Just for that day. And after that she's never wanted it again 😂 I'm glad because everyone says it's hard to wean them off of it.

I gave my baby a pacifier at 10 days old! No nipple confusion whatsoever. My son's doctor actually suggested that I give him one to help soothe him. Now he uses it majority of the day 😬 .. I probably should have limited it.. But it works so well lol

Ever since day 1! I don't use them all day. I use them when she's over tired and it calms her down. That's the only time and I've had no issues at all
