birth control pills

Ok so I'm 16 years old and I've been thinking about going on the pill. Not that I need it to make sure I don't get pregnant but to control my period because my cramps have gotten a lot worse lately. And I've been having irregular periods too. But I'm not sure how my parents will feel about that. They might think I'm getting it for another reason. Even though I'm not. My parents are kinda strict. Is it true that birth control pills can help you control you periods too? And if they do what should I do about my parents? I need help.
