Polycystic Ovaries & Not Ovulating?

Question

My doctor did an ultrasound & I have polycystic ovaries. I have had irregular periods & am not ovulating on my own. 
The doctor never confirmed PCOS. He just told me about the cysts & explained I'd have to be on BC when not TTC & Clomid if TTC. 
I want my period cycles to be regular! Any advice?! 
I have heard of Metformin, but I've also heard you can only take that when you have PCOS due to insulin issues. Is this true?

I have PCOS and stayed on birth control until I was ready to conceive. When I was ready my doctor put me on Clomid the 1st month, which regulates your period and it also made me ovulate. However it did make my uterine lining too thin so the 2nd and 3 month got put on Femera instead which does the same thing and got pregnant the 3rd month with Femera and my first IUI

I have pcos is both ovarys to the point i grow a beard my weight yo-yos between 110kg and 119kg my firtility doctor recomended i go on a low to no carb diet but not the atkins diet as that is high fat and can cause more problems. We have been ttc for 6 years and sadly lost a baby 5 years ago although i do have high quality and quantity eggs my pcos stops me from ovulating and i have now been put on slow relise metformin to help with the side affects of pcos and my insulin risistance but when my sister who has the same issues was on metformin it helped her get pregnant and now out of 8 pregnancies she has 2 children and 1 on the way so i am staying hopeful that we will get our chance.
