belly sleeping question

My son has been rolling over since 3months (at first he was actually face sleeping). I put him to sleep on his back and he almost immediately rolls to his stomach. Now I know once they roll it is safe and the pediatrician had told us not to worry. He's crawling now and very mobile so head control and what not isn't an issue.
However putting him to sleep on his back every night is getting tough. He goes down easier if I put him on his side (this actually prevents him from immediately rolling on his stomach). When I put him on his back as soon as he rolls he starts screaming until he lolls himself back to sleep. With the sleep recommendations im a little confused.. am I okay to be putting him
Down on his side or is it solely ONLY safe when he does it on his own?
He's going to do it no matter what there really is no question about that.
