brownish bright red blood

I'm supposed to start my period in 12 days and I found brown and bright red blood in my underwear what could be happening here? I'm on birth control and this scares me that maybe the pill failed or something. I'm supposed to be getting into the doctor soon but I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and maybe what they found caused it.
