Is she being an ass or reasonable?

This Christmas I think my boyfriend is getting me a ring, not like an engagement ring but a promise ring and I feel that since he never lets me buy him anything big  (not even on his birthday or Valentine's Day) I want to just save up money and get him a promise ring for his birthday which is in February. I told my mom this and she told me to just get him some gloves and a hat. That theres no reason for me to buy him a ring. But I feel like since me and him have  been together for a year now and I haven't ever bought him anything big that buying him a simple plain silver ring like he wants or a watch would be appropriate...
