I've dealt with this my entire life. I can't even tell you how many times i'm been written off as some angry black woman because of my mental illnesses. I couldn't even get some health care professionals to take me seriously.

For a long time in my family mental health issues were considered "white people problems". As it turns out mental illness runs in my family and it wasn't until at my (predominantly white) high school did a counselor refer me for treatment. Before then, I wasn't even aware I could be treated for something like "anxiety".

I feel so many ways about this statement. It's true in the sense that as a society we are always shown in a negative light. society doesn't CARE about the issues that affect us which makes it even easier to cast us and our actions and anger into an even more negative stereotype. Our culture dismisses mental/emotional health issues as well because it's been forced on us not too. My aunt preaches this "we are black and don't have time for anxiety" agenda because well honestly, because we DONT have the same opportunities to work through our issues and many don't see them going away any time soon, why dwell on it? You gotta keep moving. I deal with anxiety and it took me years to even seek out help.

There is actually real life issues the the diagnostic world where gender, race and disabilities (mentally and physically) can influence whether you're diagnosed or not. Or whether your incorrectly diagnosed or not.

It's true. There's been multiple studies on this recently. Black women are significantly less likely to receive anxiety and depression diagnoses, while more likely to receive more serious ones like schizophrenia. It's something the diagnostic community needs to look critically into.

This is so true. And black men can be some of he worst offenders of this. They always compare the black woman to other races and say 'that's why I don't date black women, they have bad attitudes'

Some of these opinions from non black women have me cringing. In high school a friend of mine was bi polar and had severe depression, no one thought to see her as anything other than another bitch with a bad attitude until they saw they cuts on her arms and she had to get her stomach pumped. Only after she spent months in the hospital did people see her as vulnerable but before then it was "she's rude, she's a bitch" and all of the above
