Baby's have a very strong sucking reflex that started in utero and continues when he/she is born. This is why paci's are so popular. It's common for baby to suckle himself to sleep while nursing, very common. It's soothing for baby. I've breastfed all three of my kids and nursed them all to sleep for the first minimum 9 months and I breastfed for a year with each of them. They do continue to suckle after falling asleep. When baby is little I let him until he pulls off because it's good for milk supply. As baby grows I unlatch when I know it's just for comfort and replace with a binki
