period questions

you know that awkward stage where you don't have your period but you're kind of spotting, like it's coming but not full blown yet. do i use tampons during that? i'm really afraid of getting TSS and i don't have any pads. i've been just putting toilet paper using it as like a 'panty liner'. HELP
