What do you think of programs that allow pregnant imprisoned women to keep their babies behind bars with them?

Research has shown that mothers who give birth behind bars and are able to keep their children with them have lower rates of future imprisonment and the children have lower chances of imprisionment later in their life. In order to be accepted into this program the women cannot have a violent record or background and are kept away from other inmates. They also have to be in therapy programs and parenting classes. Do you think these programs are a good idea or do you think they are bad?

No. Babies do not belong in a jail cell..

I think it would be good for the mother, but I'm not confident on how good the environment would be for the child. Yes, they are with the mom, which is good for bonding purposes, which gives the mom a reason to turn away from crime, but wouldn't it normalize a jail cell in the child's view (depending on how long the mom is incarcerated)? Also, prisons aren't entirely safe for a child to be raised in. What if the father is incarcerated as well, how would that work out?

Until what age? Can you imagine the type of harassment those kids would get if they're going to elementary school and getting dropped off at the correctional facility? Or the fact that they wouldn't be able to socialize with other kids because the parents don't know each other? And if there was an age cut off, at what point would you take the child away from the mother? Wouldn't that be worse for the child? Maybe I could see that if the mother was nearing the end of her sentence. Maybe.

I see how it is beneficial for the women in the prison, and I agree with keeping children with their mothers. However, I don't think that is a good environment to raise a child in

Prison should be about rehab and identifying the derailers that got that person there instead of working inmates to death for mediocre pay (look up the prison industrial complex). The same therapy programs and parenting classes should be mandatory for non violent male inmates as well. We need to help these inmates get out and get back on the right track not institutionalize them until they're completely unable to conduct themselves with regular society so they end up back where they started at.
