Pit bulls good family pet?

Do you think they are good family pets? I've read both sides & I have loved the ones I've met, but I can't ignore the stories of the family pit bulls (like family dogs who never showed any signs of aggression) who just snap and attack. I also have to think there has to be some validity to the city wide bans in certain areas. Thoughts?
