Horrible Sleeper

My baby from day one has been the worst sleeper.  When I brought him home I would have to stay up days at time.  He would only sleep if held.  Finally two months started sleeping in the rock n play 2 or 3 hours at a time.  Then he out grew it and tried with the crib and eventually gave up when I went back to work.  Reluctantly I put him in bed with me and again would sleep 2 or 3 hours At a time.  NOW he has started waking up every hour for the last two weeks.  I feel like death and can barely function at work.  I've tried everything.  Is anybody else's baby the worst sleeper???
