Would you be mad?

Question

Would you be mad/upset if your 11yr old daughter started her period but told her sister-in-law (your oldest sons wife) first? 
My husband's little sister came to me today. She was unsure of what a period really was & what happens. So I explained it too her & asked her why she was curious. She started crying & told me she started her period this morning. Her mom works third shift & was sleeping. So i took her to get some pads and told her she needed to tell her mom. I think her mom is a little upset with me...but I dont know what else I could have done.

No, I would be happy she told someone she trusted. Having a large circle of women she can trust is awesome. (I might be a little sad though)

I mean I might be a little sad that I wasn't the first one to know but I would also be very happy that she had someone else that she trusted to go to when I couldn't be there..

My mom didn't tell me jack about my body and the changes that were taking place. I was at my grandmother's house and the only people home were us kids and our uncles. I remember being a screaming, hysterical 10 year old, running down the hallway, not knowing what to do. My uncle Jimmy asked what's going on because he thought us kids were fighting. Everyone else was outside, I was in the hall screaming "I don't know... I don't know..." He looks at me and says "Anna, you've started your period, that's all" I said what is that. He asked did my mother not tell me. I said she doesn't tell me anything about my body. He told me to take a shower and change because I was a mess. He sat me down and started the conversation with "there comes a time in every girls life...." My uncle Charles had just come in on the conversation. They looked at each other. My uncle Jimmy told him "she started her period." He just nodded his head and said oh ok. I asked them "if this only happens to women how do you know about it? How can you so casually explain this?" They said "we grew up in a house with four sisters, one being your mom!" After the talk, uncle Jimmy said, "ok, I gave her the talk, you have to take get to the store" to my uncle Charles. Now having men know more about your body than you do is a whole lot worse than having your aunt in law explain it. At the same time, the mother should have told her before the fact. Then she wouldn't have the need to be upset.

Girls in my family start young so we got the period talk when we were 5 and lucky me I stared when I was six and at school of all places. I knew what was happening and went to the nurse and asked for a pad and she looked at me like I had lost my mind. I ended up calling my dad and he brought me some to school and they asked him to wait until Social service showed up because they suspected abuse. Now my dad had just been home from the Marines for 6 maybe 7 months and I will never forget the response he gave word for word "now why is it when a girl gets her period at a young age in this school it's a cause for social services? If you recall me from about 9 and 7 years ago when my step-daughters came and asked for pads you did the same thing and they had already been having them for three months you would also recall that they were found with intact hymens and I ended up winning the law suit against this school for making my daughters go through an invasive procedure just for the fact that they were "way too young" have a period. So I will wait but she's getting her pads and getting back to class because you missy have a spelling test next block. Go." I just left and I ended up not having to go anywhere. I really wasn't going to say anything to my parents other then I need some pads when the time came. You helped a scared little girl when she needed someone so who cares if her mom is mad she needed someone and you were there and she will remember that in the future.

I'd be upset that she didn't come to me first. But I wouldn't be angry with you for it.

Were you supposed to give her a pad and tell her to ask her mum what it's for? Or let her bleed all over her pants til her mum woke up.

I'd have did the same thing

I was 10 when I started and I knew what to get from adverts on TV. So instead of asking I used my lunch money to buy them. I didn't know it was called a period or what was going on. 
When we had the talk at school I was 12 and I told my dad that night and asked whatever questions I had. he told me I wasn't his little girl anymore and it broke my heart.  Mum was angry with me for not telling her sooner. And for stealing her tampons when I was caught out

You did the right thing and so did she. She was upset and needed to talk to somebody and couldn't wait. Some girls hide their periods and fear talking to anyone about it. It can be difficult talking to your own parents about these things sometimes out of shame or fear and girls will seek somebody else they trust. She did the responsible, brave thing and so did you.
