iud experiences

So im currently on the pill ive been on it for like 7-8 months now and im going to get the mirena iud this thursday. Im a little bit nervous about it pain wise and how long until im officially protected (my doctor didnt clarify she just said a couple of weeks). I know everyones body is different and all but I would like to know different experiences that women have had with getting the mirena iud.
