Birth Control Question

Let's say I was supposed to get my period on Saturday. If I started taking my very first pill on friday, would it just stop my period from coming? I'm very confused about how the pill works!! Like, if you started taking the pill the day before your period was predicted to start, would it make you not get your period??????????
