Life support: delaying the inevitable...
My uncle (dads brother) is currently on life support in the ICU, he had a major heart attack. His heart is irreparable, a machine is working for him and he's in a medically induced coma. This happened 3 days ago, now they are talking about a heart transplant.. Here's the thing, he's in his early/mid 40's. He's kind of a bum, a loaner. He's a smoker, he uses alcohol heavily, uses recreational drugs, bad eating habits, no physical activity. He doesn't have a wife/gf or kids. He doesn't have a stable job or INSURANCE. Being in the ICU is expensive, being on life support is expensive, having a team of nurses and doctors take care of you 24/7 is expensive! I was researching online, one website said it was about $997,800 for a heart transplant. Which requires after care, follow up appointments, medication and taking care of your body. Unfortunately my uncle isn't a very responsible guy and probably wouldn't follow through with his treatment. I'd hate to see my family go into debt because of his medical bills. I am worried for my grandparents, what this will do to them if they have to take him off life support and he dies. Or go into crippling debt. I know I sound cold hearted but I am looking at the big picture here. I am looking out for my family.
